The first day of Trump's second term

On day one, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history to get the criminals out,” Donald Trump was quoted during a rally in New York City days before the election. Though there are nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States according to federal estimates, fewer than 500,000 were known to have criminal backgrounds. He also claimed in a December interview with NBC News that it was still “absolutely” his plan to end birthright citizenship, despite its foundation in the 14th amendment of the Constitution, rendering it impervious to executive order. It is worth noting that Trump signed only one executive order on the first day of his previous term, targeting Obamacare.

Trump’s allies have been preparing executive orders for Trump to sign on his first day in office. According to AP News, Trump’s plans involve executive aggression unprecedented in the modern age as he intends to bypass the legislative machinery of Congress. These reportedly include a clampdown on the U.S.-Mexico border as well as some $100 billion in proposals to finish the border wall and establish immigration detention facilities where immigrants could be detained before being expelled from the country. Trump is expected to revert to U.S-Mexico border measures in place during his first term, including those requiring applicants remain outside of the U.S. while their claims are being processed. He is also expected, most likely by executive order, to reinstate the travel bans of his earlier administration, and suspend the admission of refugees into the country.
