“Victimization should not be a basis for an immigration benefit.”
2025 Mandate for Leadership, the Conservative Promise, pg. 144
As the second Trump term nears, it is worth noting the roadmap put forth by the conservative Heritage Foundation known as Project 2025 that many suspect will guide policy. The 2025 Mandate for Leadership, the Conservative Promise, more commonly known as Project 2025, is a conservative plan for the first 180 days in office drafted by the Heritage Foundation. Despite attempts to distance himself, Trump has been linked to the project, as several authors, editors and contributors of Project 2025 were part of his first administration, which either implemented or took into consideration roughly 64% of policy recommendations from the 2016 Mandate for Leadership. The aims of this project are worrying for many reasons, especially its goals regarding immigration.
Project 2025 calls for the repeal of Temporary Protected Status, which would result in 700,000 immigrants losing work authorization, exposing them to the threat of deportation, despite their home countries being considered unsafe. Project 2025 also includes plans to increase application fees alongside the elimination of categories of temporary and permanent visas, including the elimination of T and U visas that protect victims of crime or trafficking who act as witnesses for law enforcement. Another goal is to phase out DACA by eliminating staff time for the review and process of renewal applications so as to prevent the over 500,000 DACA recipients from renewing their status by way of understaffing. It also calls for the use of military personnel and hardware at the border, alongside new laws to shut down the border, including those to obstruct asylum seekers, and to increase wall construction. The document meant to guide the coming administration calls for the doubling of the number of immigrants who can be detained while facing deportation, up to 100,000 on any day.
