About the Petition for Naturalization:
Applying for U.S. citizenship is one of the most direct and simple procedures that can be carried out before Immigration, as long as the indispensable requirements are met:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be a permanent resident (green card holder) for a minimum of 5 years (3 years for those married to U.S. citizens).
- Good moral character
- Have been in the U.S. for at least 30 months in the last 5 years.
- Demonstrate ability to read and write English (basic level) (with exceptions)
- Pass U.S. history and civics test (with exceptions)
- Pledge of Allegiance to the U.S.
Generally, the issue becomes more complicated when Immigration finds indications that the requirements of continued presence in the country or good moral character have not been met or are in question.

- You have been out of the country for 6 months or more.
- You have lived in another country since obtaining permanent residence.
