WASHINGTON – U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today published a Federal Register notice setting forth procedures for Liberians protected by Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) to apply for Employment Authorization Documents that will be valid until June 30, 2026.
President Joe Biden issued a memorandum on DED for Liberians on June 28, 2024, which deferred until June 30, 2026, the removal of certain Liberians who were eligible for DED under the President’s 2022 memorandum, including those who have been continuously present in the United States since May 20, 2017.
Through this Federal Register notice, USCIS has automatically extended until June 30, 2026 the validity of DED-related EADs that have a Category Code of A11 and an expiration date of March 30, 2020; January 10, 2021; June 30, 2022; or June 30, 2024.
There is no application for DED.
Liberian nationals and persons without nationality whose last habitual residence was in Liberia are protected by DED under the terms described in the President’s directive.
The Department of Homeland Security may provide travel authorization at its discretion to all persons protected under DED for Liberians.
Individuals who wish to travel outside the United States may file a Form I-131, Application for Travel Document.
Also, they may apply for an EAD by filing Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization.
The Federal Register notice provides additional information on the DED for Liberia and how eligible individuals may apply for an EAD or employment authorization on the basis of the EAD.
USCIS adjudicates each EAD application in a fair, humane and efficient manner on a case-by-case basis to determine whether applicants meet the standards and eligibility criteria.
During the past year, USCIS reduced overall EAD processing times and streamlined adjudication processing.
Additional information on DED-based EAD fees can be found on the USCIS website.
