Immigration has long been a contentious issue in American public opinion. In 2020, the topic was much less vitriolic despite the efforts of Trump’s campaign, and some of his efforts while in office even received pushback from his own party, eventually walking back several of his more outrageous orders. By 2024, however, public sentiment regarding immigration had been slowly fanned to flames by years of constant rhetoric and Republicans insisting Biden-era immigration policies were at fault for all manner of societal ills.
Recent polling reveals that half of Americans think Trump has “gone too far” with his policies, with the percentage of those supporting mass deportation dropping slightly from a poll conducted just before Trump took office. Two thirds of Americans polled consider uncontrolled migration a serious issue, approval polling this week shows the president “underwater” with voters on his overall job performance – though the approval of his immigration efforts are at 45 percent, compared to the 46 percent opposed.
Trump’s efforts have engineered a crisis for immigrants, with the plight of some making the news cycle, with the details of their lives analyzed through a partisan rather than humanitarian lense. One such case has proven a potential galvanizing point for turning the tide on public opinion: the illegal rendition of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the father of a U.S. citizen without a criminal record due to what officials have called “administrative error.” The administration has reportedly ignored a Supreme Court order to “facilitate” Abrego Garcia’s retrieval. Though the case has led to some outrage, according to the Associated Press, Democratic Senator Gavin Newsom has called the case a “distraction” from the more obvious vulnerability in Trump’s approval: tariffs.
