A federal appeals court in Atlanta, Georgia has temporarily halted the closure of Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz despite environmental risks and human rights violations. Judge Kathleen Williams ruled that the detention camp should be closed and its construction halted due to environmental concerns.
Criticisms of this detention camp include human rights abuses such as “harsh conditions, mistreatment of detainees and denial of due process while awaiting deportation, as well as environmental damage,” according to The Guardian.
The conditions at Alligator Alley where detainees were held included “sweltering heat, bug infestations and meager meals,” CNN reported. Conditions were so shocking that members of Congress and state representatives who visited the facility demanded its immediate closure.
Unsurprisingly, when Donald Trump visited the facility, he praised the cruel conditions in which detainees were held, “some of whom have accused authorities of inadequate medical care and other poor conditions,” according to The Guardian.
In light of this reality, the immigration lawyer Miami Marcela Rodríguez emphasizes that cases like Alligator Alcatraz highlight the urgent need for informed legal representation to defend detainees’ rights. The fight against these abuses is carried out not only in the courts but also by raising awareness of injustices that affect thousands of immigrant families.
