The recent appointment of Cardinal Robert Francis Provost, now Pope Leo XIV to the head of the papacy has many wondering where he stands on current events, including immigration. The recently deceased Pope Francis was a vocal critic of the Trump administration especially with regards to the rhetoric and inhumane practices used against immigrants in the United States. When interviewed by the Guardian, his brother told reporters that Pope Leo XIV “shared Pope Francis’ objections” in this matter, and stated that he would likely not “stay quiet for too long if he has something to say.”
Further indications of his positions come from the New York Times, which reported on a social media account under his name predating his appointment to the papacy that made criticisms of the Trump administration and its handling of immigration, sharing an article refuting JD Vance’s interpretations of Christian doctrine. Though this account most often reposted, these posts were often sympathetic to the plight of immigrants under the Trump administration, objecting to the rescinding of DACA and family separations.
It is likely safe to assume the newly appointed Pope does not approve of Trump’s immigration policies. Though Trump was enthusiastic in his approval of the new pope’s appointment, citing his being American, some of his supporters are much less enthusiastic. Steve Bannon, an “outspoken” Catholic Trump ally, reportedly claimed that Pope Leo XIV is “one of the dark horses,” one of the most progressive candidates of the conclave.
Be very careful!
