The first time the police arrived on her doorstep, in March of 2015, Courtney Allen was elated. She rushed to the door alongside her dogs, a pair of eager Norwegian elkhounds, to greet them. “Is this about our case?” she asked. The police looked at her in confusion. They didn’t know what case she was talking about. Courtney felt her hope give way to a familiar dread. Three days earlier, Courtney and her husband, Steven, had gone to the police headquarters in Kent, Washington, a suburb of Seattle, and reported that, for the past few months, they had been the [...]

Washington (CNN)The White House is seeking to distance President Donald Trump from the indictments of two former campaign officials, claiming that the charges have nothing to do with Trump's campaign or his presidency. These claims, which track with the Trump administration's earlier attempts to inoculate the President from his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former Trump campaign official Rick Gates, set up the argument that the President's successful campaign was staffed by people with criminal ties, but did not engage in criminal behavior itself. Both Manafort and Gates were indicated by special counsel Robert Mueller on Monday. White [...]

(CNN)We messed up, but it is still your problem. That is what the government is essentially telling young immigrants whose Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, renewals did not arrive on time, due to delays with the US Postal Service. After Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced in September that the Trump administration was ending the DACA program, immigrant youths -- known as Dreamers -- scrambled to obtain one last renewal of their temporary grant of deportation relief before an October 5 deadline. But according to an article in The New York Times, lawyers for DACA applicants said there [...]

Paul Manafort and Rick Gates were indicted on financial charges, but George Papadopoulos was the surprise as the Russia inquiry enveloped the capital   For a moment in court, the mask slipped. Paul Manafort glanced at his lawyer and smirked, like a TV mafia boss with reasons to be confident. It was the look of a man who, after decades of work as a lobbyist for murderous dictators in Africa and Asia, was not about to be rattled by the prospect of house arrest. But less than a mile away, another man displayed rather less equanimity. Donald Trump woke before [...]

An ad featuring a strapping Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) proffered a sketch book for users to “color your hero.” A post from South United invited followers to click a billowing Confederate flag. An invitation advertised an anti-Clinton rally to counter “anti-constitutional propaganda.” Each were recently revealed  by lawmakers as Facebook fronts for the Russia-affiliated Internet Research Agency. The posts confirmed platform-enhanced intrusion in the 2016 election, paid in rubles, not dollars. A small social media spend could upend American democracy. WIRED OPINION ABOUT Matthew Spector (@mspec) is a managing editor of the Kennedy School Review at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government [...]

Image: Getty Images for DIRECTV The ACLU might be busy lately, but that doesn't mean they don't have time for Taylor Swift. The Northern California branch of the non-profit organization came to the defense of a critic for PopFront Magazine after the online publication received a letter demanding retraction and removal of a post that criticized the singer. SEE ALSO: This one lyric from 'Gorgeous' is proof that the old Taylor Swift is not dead The original post —"Swiftly to the alt-right: Taylor subtly gets the lower case kkk in formation"—explores the suggested connection between white supremacy, Swift's music, [...]

For black Americans, citizenship has always been incomplete and fraught. Kaepernick knows this better than anyone else   Its been a couple of days, and the news of GQ magazine naming Colin Kaepernick its Citizen of the Year has brought forth both love from some and loathing from others. Fox News host and columnist, Todd Starnes ventilated his vitriolic views that GQ should have named Kaepernick its, coward of the year. Starnes couched his claim in his belief that Colin Kaepernicks protesting racialized systemic oppression in America is, not citizenship thats cowardice. I found Starnes claim to be interesting. Not [...]

Obama Showed Up For Jury Duty And Was Dismissed (Duh)

Barack Obama was dismissed from jury duty because, no duh, having the former freakin' president on the jury would be incredibly distracting. Can you imagine being the unlucky defendant to have an ex president on the jury? Here you've spent your whole life working at your craft at becoming a serial killer, only to have Obama waltz in and steal your thunder. Lawyers routinely dismiss "experts" from the jury, especially legal ones. It complicates the proceedings as they bring in outside knowledge to the courtroom. Obama is a former lawyer (and president) which would be incredibly frustrating for an attorney [...]

Plunging the US trial of three former Fifa officials deeper into controversy, federal prosecutors on Wednesday accused Manuel Burga, the former head of Perus football association, of making a slicing motion across his throat directed at Alejandro Burzaco, a former [...]
